A Ten Day road closure on a stretch of the A30 between Crewkerne to Yeovil begins at 0700hrs on Monday June 13th. The 460 metres road closure from the Foxhole Lane turning to just before the turning to Cod Lane, next to West Country Cars at Barrows Hill, East Chinnock, will be in operation from 0700hrs until 1900hrs on Mondays to Fridays from June 13th to June 17th and from June 20th until June 24th. Before and after these hours and during the weekend between the above dates, the section of the A30 will be open to traffic.
College students travelling by bus on the new 96A service, leaving Chard at 0720hrs and calling at Crewkerne, Misterton, North Perrott, Haselbury Plucknett, East Chinnock, West Coker and Yeovil, will not be affected, as South West Coaches have successfully negotiated permission to travel along their scheduled route, with Somerset Highways. The last bus of the day from Yeovil to Chard via Crewkerne, leaving Yeovil at 1920hrs, will also run along its scheduled route. All other weekday buses between Crewkerne and Yeovil and in the opposite direction, will be undertaking the 18.3 mile diversion, out onto the A303, completing the loop.
This diversion means that the villages of East Chinnock and West Coker will not be serviced by their usual form of public transport, during road closure hours. A mini bus shuttle service has been organised by Somerset County Council.
Businesses in Crewkerne and along the A30 are concerned that the long diversion in place will affect their trade. Chairman of Crewkerne Area Business Chamber, Brian Forster, spoke to Crewkerne Town Council and Somerset Highways on Tuesday. Brian said: “Today I have spoken to the town council and highways on this matter. They have assured me that they will post signs to let drivers know that Crewkerne is open for business as usual.”
