ROTARIANS SHARE THEIR FUNDRAISING SUCCESSES AT COFFEE HOUSE

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Crewkerne shared their fund-raising successes with shoppers, who stopped to talk to them over a cup of coffee at Costa. Members from the club, which is involved in a full range of activities for the benefit of the local community and for international Rotary causes, handed out ‘Why Rotary’ leaflets as they encouraged other community minded citizens to join them.

The open air coffee morning, courtesy of the management of Costa coffee in Falkland Square, was seen as a great way to be out and about in the community. The Rotary Club of Crewkerne was granted its charter on June 25th 1953. As the club prepares to celebrate its 64th Anniversary, in the same year that Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, celebrates its Centenary, the local Rotarians are inviting others to join them and keep up the good work, fundraising for international and local projects.

The Rotary Club of Crewkerne assists at many local annual events which include the 10k and 5k Run, St Bartholomew’s Fair, Crewkerne Hospital Fete and the Christmas Lighting Up. They have provided support to Crewkerne Running Club, Crewkerne Triathlon, Wadham School,, St Margaret’s Hospice, local playgroups and many other local organisations. Last year joint fund-raising with the club and the League of Friends of Crewkerne Hospital, enabled six defibrillators to be installed at public places across the town.

On a national level, the club has supported Help For Heroes, Macmillan, the Stroke Association and the NSPCC, to name just a few. Internationally, Rotarians have assisted with the Shelter Box and Water Aid appeals. During 2009/2010 donations of £5,000 were sent to Polio Plus from the Rotary Club of Crewkerne. This helped to fund the continued immunization of the polio disease in four endemic countries.

Since Rotary members across the world made polio eradication their top priority in 1985, polio cases have fallen from 350,000 a year to under 1,000. A combined total of over £376 million has been raised and the benevolent work continues today in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, protecting young children against the polio disease.
