Domino’s opened its new hot food takeaway in the town on Monday afternoon. Domino’s Pizza Crewkerne decided on a ‘soft launch’ with no formal announcements made by the company, before they opened the doors to customers. Costumed characters of super heroes, brought in from an outside agency, walked up and down the streets with placards telling people that Domino’s was open and offering a special pizza deal.
Red, white and blue balloons formed an arch over the doorway to the new pizza store in South Street. Within less than two hours of Domino’s opening its door and the first customer having been served just after 4 pm, staff were kept continuously busy with a brisk trade of orders.
Third State Pizza Company Ltd (A franchise of the national Domino’s pizza brand) first applied for change of use from a Chinese restaurant (Class A3) to a hot food takeaway (Class A5) in March 2016. Various concerns raised on the position of the site, near a busy road junction between Blacknell Lane Trading Estate and South Street, the limited amount of parking for delivery drivers and customers and conservation issues with reference to the internal alterations and installation of extraction and ventilation equipment, in a listed building, delayed the planning application. South Somerset District Council granted Listed Building Consent and full planning permission with conditions in September of last year.
Approximately 14 months after the the planning process began, Domino’s Pizza Crewkerne is up and running and proving to a be a popular addition to the town’s hot food takeaway menu by the majority of local people.
