MAYOR AND TOWN CRIER TO LAUNCH U3A’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Crewkerne Mayor, councillor Ben Hodgson and town crier David Craner will launch the 20th Anniversary party for Crewkerne & District U3A on Saturday June 17th at 10 am in Victoria Hall. Among those taking part will be the founder chairman John Ashworth and ten other founding members of the original committee, who were honoured recently with gold cards giving them life membership of Crewkerne & District U3A. The U3A’s South West Regional trustee Diana Holdsworth will travel to Crewkerne from her home in Paignton, to join in the celebrations.

Crewkerne U3A now has 360 members and runs more than 40 special interest groups, ranging from geology and jazz appreciation to French conversation and walking football. Many of the groups will be displaying their skills and giving demonstrations of the work they do at stalls in Victoria Hall. There will also be an exhibition of photographs of key events over the past 20 years. During the afternoon, entetainment will be provided with poetry recitals, ukelele playing and folk dancing. A cafe with a country garden theme, featuring scenery painted by local artist Janet Potter, will serve food all day from morning coffee and cakes, ploughmans lunches to cream teas in the afternoon.

Crewkerne U3A’s magazine editor Teresa Bond plans to publish a special edition to commemorate the day. Chair Anne Bright said: “The U3A has enriched the lives of hundreds of people in Crewkerne and District, through the new skills they have learned and the friendships they have made. There may be old friends or possible new members, taking a look at the U3A for the first time but we’d like as many people as possible to come along and celebrate with us. It is going to be a great day.” Everyone is welcome to the exhibition, demonstrations and entertainment, to help Crewkerne & District U3A celebrate their special day. The event runs from 10 am until 5 pm, entry is free.
