Dorothy Wiles, who has run the poetry group at Crewkerne & District U3A for 10 years, has received a long service award. The presentation was made at the U3A’s annual general meeting at Henhayes Centre by chair Anne Bright. Dorothy and her husband Cliff moved to Crewkerne from Chelmsford in 1997. Anne explained that Dorothy had taken over the poetry group on the retirement of the previous leader, saying at the time that she knew nothing about it.
Chair Anne Bright said: “How wrong Dorothy was. Under her leadership the poetry group has had a very successful 10 years.” The citation on the Certificate of Appreciation states that the poetry group continues to be very active and has fun: ‘Many of the members have been in the group for a very long time, including some who have been to every meeting. The group explores many aspects of poetry and many different poets. The emphasis is mainly modern, light-hearted and fun. The group also has members who like to write their own poetry.’
Although they were not present at the award ceremony, two other group leaders in Crewkerne & District U3A, have received long service awards for 10 years, they are John Vickers of the Outdoor Art group and David Newman for the fun of language and previously French conversation and Latin group.
