The secret walled gardens at the back of Speedwell Hall in Abbey Street, will open its gates for a live music event on Saturday July 29th from 1 pm. Billed as a ‘fun afternoon in lovely surroundings’, back ground folk music will be played until 2 pm when a variety of singers, bands and a community choir will take to the stage. The line-up includes singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player Julian Dawson, the One Tree Hill acoustic band playing old pop, ska and reggae plus more modern songs, the South Somerset Community Choir directed by Jonathan Delbridge, Yeovil Ukulele Band and local 50s and 60s singer Victoria Starr. Tickets are available at £5 for adults and £2.50 for under 14’s in advance from the LIC in the town hall or from Mike on 01460 72417 or Christine on 01460 271220. Tickets on the gate will cost £6 for adults and £3 for under 14’s.
Organisers are inviting people to bring a picnic and something to sit on. Teas, coffees, soft drinks and ice-creams will be on sale during the Music In The Speedwell Gardens open-air concert. All proceeds will help to maintain the Speedwell listed buildings and its gardens. The former milliners and hat shop was bequeathed to the young ladies of Crewkerne in 1923. It is currently used by many local organisations that include toddler groups, girl guiding units, a community choir, three U3A specialist groups and the weekly Country Market on Friday mornings. Funds raised from the concert will go towards a £45,000 scheme, to replace the main hall floor and redecorate the premises with a plan to strip back the walls to expose any of the original features of the building.
Christine Rawe, a trustee and secretary of the Speedwell said: “The concert is the first of its kind that we have held but if the music event is successful, we are hoping to stage an open air drama production next year.” The winners of the grand draw with a 1st prize of £100 cash, 2nd prize of Sunday lunch for two people at Haselbury Mill, 3rd prize of a food hamper, kindly donated by Humphries Kirk, Haselbury Mill and Wakelys, with many more wonderful prizes on offer, will be announced during the event.
