A petition has been raised to save the Saturday bus service between Bridport, Beaminster, Crewkerne and Yeovil. The bus timetable for route 40, currently operated by Damory, runs out later this month, when Dorset County Council begin direct operation for the bus service on Monday July 24th. The replacement service will operate on Mondays to Fridays only, keeping to the current weekday timetable. Under the Damory operated service, there are three buses on Saturdays from Bridport to Yeovil and three from Yeovil to Bridport.
The petition to maintain Saturday buses on route 40 is available to sign in the LIC at the town hall in Crewkerne and in the other towns that will be affected by the changes. It calls on Dorset County Council to maintain their support for the Saturday bus service, to enable residents along its route to access Crewkerne railway station and to carry out their business in Bridport and Yeovil.
Crewkerne Town Council have stated that the Saturday service is important for students who use the bus to go to work. The cuts to the bus service are being made by Dorset County Council who need to reduce their public transport subsidy by £1m and their school transport subsidy by £850,000 in 2017/18. The review of public and school transport was needed because of Central government reducing its funding to Dorset County Council. DCC said: “It will not be possible to retain the current public bus network within our revised budgets, many existing services will change.”
Route 40 is classed as an existing inter-urban route. Journeys between Bridport town and Bridport hospital and to Yeovil college are seen as a priority. The last Damory buses on the number 40 service, will run on Saturday July 22nd and when the new bus service begins the following week, there will be no Saturday bus timetable, for the route between Bridport and Yeovil.
