Crewkerne & District U3A has signed up 20 new members, who were told that belonging to the University of the Third Age is all about learning, laughing and living. The new members attended a meeting at the George Reynolds Centre where they met chair Anne Bright and members of the U3A committee, to find out more about how the U3A works.
Crewkerne & District U3A has about 400 members and around 45 special interest groups, which are free to join and no fees are paid to the tutors. There is an annual membership fee, currently at £15, of which £3.50 goes to the Third Age Trust to cover insurance, the Third Age Matters magazine and the costs of running head office. Val Warren, who is representative of the Avalon network of U3As in South Somerset and who also serves on the South West region committee, told the new members: “We are a bottom-up organisation that is all about learning, laughing and living.”
Val invited them to the next U3A induction workshop in September. Among the other committee members who were present, were Dave Charnick membership secretary, Tina Mortimer treasurer, Maggie Hewson newsletter editor, Ann Lewis business secretary and John Bartholomew events organiser. Chair Anne Bright said: “I was delighted to welcome our 20 new members. It underlines how Crewkerne & District U3A continues to go from strength to strength. They are joining an organisation with 1,010 groups throughout the UK and 385,000 members.” The meeting concluded with a cream tea.
