Around 100 people visited St Bartholomew’s Church for the Bell Tower Open Day, organised by the bell ringers and supported by the church. The event offered visitors the opportunity to climb up to the tower and view the town and surrounding countryside from on high. There was also the chance for those who were interested in learning more about bell ringing, to have a go. Demand for the experience exceeded expectations, with attendees of all ages squashing two-deep into the bell ringing chamber. One tower visitor said: “It’s great to see such enthusiasm and interest from the public in what is often seen as a dying art. It’s clear that Crewkerne is bucking the national trend.”
The event which coincided with Crewkerne Fair, was a ringing endorsement for Crewkerne campanologists, raising over £70 for the bell funds. Tower captain Liz Hughes said: “I would like to say thank you all very much to those who came down and helped to make it such a success.” Practice night is on Mondays from 7.30 pm. No experience or musical expertise is necessary. For more information about joining the bell ringers, please contact Liz Hughes on 01460 75648.
