BANK CHANGES OPENING HOURS IN YEAR OF 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Lloyds Bank in Market Square is changing its opening hours from Monday October 2nd. The new opening hours will see the bank open 30 minutes later on weekdays at 10 am and close at 3 pm. The Crewkerne branch of the bank is celebrating its 150th Anniversary of being in the town. The history of the branch goes back to 1867 when the Wilts & Dorset Bank opened a branch in Market Square, which museum records show was across the road either in the building now occupied by Bengal Fusion or where Lawrences estate agents are currently situated.

The Wilts and Dorset Bank moved to larger premises at 37 Market Square in 1897, into the Georgian building which was previously a private house, built in 1809 by John Slade for his daughter and son-in-law George Jolliffe. The Wilts & Dorset Bank were finding it increasingly difficult to compete with the larger banks and in 1914 were taken over by Lloyds Bank, whose Crewkerne branch remains in the same building today and has seen many improvements over the years, including a major renovation of the premises in 1954 which provided improved facilities for customers.
