Ladies from the Inner Wheel Club of Crewkerne, spent a morning filling shoe boxes for Romanian children. Twelve boxes were made up and other boxes filled later. The shoe boxes will be given as Christmas presents to the children in hospitals, clinics and in orphanages. The boxed gifts will be accompanied by a large knitted blanket made by Crewkerne Inner Wheel club member Tricia Harris, in support of the Christmas appeal run by SWEEPS.
South West England European Prayer and Support, is a registered charity based in Bridgwater that was set up by Andrea and John Scott approximately 27 years ago. The couple were inspired to help following a visit to Romania by John, who saw the horrors of the Ceausescu regime. Although the situation has improved, aid is still needed as there are many people, particularly children, the elderly and disabled, still living in desperate conditions, especially in the more remote villages.
SWEEPS has four full time Romanian people working in the Brasov area of the country, one who helps in the childrens’ TB hospital, while the other three, organise the distribution of the aid that is sent over by lorry. They also visit and help a variety of people from the old to the very young and take long term hospital patients on outings. Well over 100 lorry loads of items have been sent out from Bridgwater by John and Andrea Scott to orphanages, clinics, psychiatric hospitals and organisations in Romania over the past 27 years.
The Inner Wheel Ladies of Crewkerne were pleased to help with the charity’s Christmas Shoe Box Appeal, an annual appeal by SWEEPS which has been supported by Inner Wheel Clubs throughout District 20 for many years.
