The League of Friends of Crewkerne Hospital have received generous donations from Merriott Bowls Club. The money was collected from swear boxes and fundraising events, during this year’s bowling season which began at the end of May. The colourful language continued on the greens until the end of the season. Players were fined 50p for swearing, 20p for wearing incorrect clothing and 20p for using the wrong bias and sending the bowls in the wrong direction. The contents of a second swear box has now been emptied and the sum of £44.03 handed over to Ron Bond, chairman of the League of Friends of Crewkerne Hospital. This amount when added to the money from the first swear box and fundraising events, including a quiz and film show, given by local film-makers the Anoraks, means that the Bowls Club have given more than £366.00 to the charity.
Nick Whitfield president of Merriott Bowls Club, decided to make the League of Friends his charity for the year, thanks to the wonderful treatment he received as a patient. Nick spent eight days at the Crewkerne hospital when he was recovering from an operation at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol to remove a brain tumour. League of Friends chairman Ron Bond said: “I’d like to thank Nick for choosing us as his charity for 2017, and all the members of Merriott Bowls Club for their fantastic support, resulting in the very generous donation. The hospital is a very important part of our community and I swear – I mean promise, that every penny will go to help support the work of the hospital in looking after the people of this area.”
