SOLICITORS COLLECT OLD SPECTACLES FOR WORLD SIGHT DAY

Williamsons Solicitors in Crewkerne were delighted to support PSG – Property Search Group, when they collected old spectacles for World Sight Day. On behalf of the Crewkerne solicitors, practice manager Hayley White and Andy Towers of PSG displayed their impressive collection of forty pairs of glasses, which will be recycled by Vision Aid Overseas, to help fund the training of eye care workers in Ghana, Ethiopia and Zambia, as well as providing eye care services and glasses to some of Africa’s poorest areas.

The income is generated by the recycling process where the precious metal content of the spectacles is extracted. 28,363 pairs of glasses have been prescribed through Vision Aid Overseas activities in the last 12 months and 47,915 eye tests have been carried out through VAO during the same time period. World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. This year it took place on October 12th with the theme of ‘Make Vision Count’.

Statistics shared by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in both developed and developing countries, show that 4 out of 5 of the world’s blind, a staggering 80% – are avoidably so. The annual sight awareness day is the most important advocacy and communications day on the eye health calendar, bringing attention to eye care issues that impact on people’s lives, across the globe. Director of Williamsons, Michael Williamson said: “We were pleased to be asked to take part in the event and so delighted to have made a contribution to such a worthwhile cause.”
