A plea for volunteers to help at Crewkerne’s Lighting Up Night, on Friday November 24th, has been issued by the Christmas Committee. More people are needed to help marshal the crowds of people that will be turning up and make it easier for Santa to travel through Market Street to the town hall. Hi viz jackets will be provided. Anyone who can provide an extra pair of hands, with a smile, is asked to please contact Laura on 01460 74001.
Crewkerne’s Lighting Up Night is one of the biggest events of the year. Many shops and cafes will be staying open and there will be charity stalls in Falkland Square and in the George Shopping Centre. Throughout the town, stalls will be selling bacon butties, roast chestnuts, mulled wine, mulled apple juice, hog roast, turkey burgers and mince pies. The craft fair in Victoria Hall will open at 5.30 pm.
At Crewkerne Library, there will be activities for children, the Christmas Hat competition for youngsters will be judged in Market Square at 5.55 pm and Oscar’s will run a junior disco from 6 pm. A variety of entertainment around the town, includes music in Market Square with radio DJ Steve Carpenter, carol singing with CUDOS at 6.30 pm and Phoenix Brass Band will play in Falkland Square from 6 pm.
The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of Santa in his sleigh, escorted by Merriott Majorettes and the Fire Service. Santa will join the town’s mayor Ben Hodgson and town crier David Craner to switch on the Christmas tree lights at 7 pm. Market Street will be closed to traffic from 6.45 pm until 7.30 pm, to ensure public safety.
