Crewkerne’s 58th Boxing Day Pram Race saw crowds of people lining the main street. The annual event was organised this year by the Crewkerne Lions Club with a full risk assessment carried out and insurance in place before the day of the race. Volunteer marshals were provided by the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District. Seven teams took part in the pram race, started by Crewkerne Lion Lesley Chudley after the Mayor of Crewkerne Ben Hodgson had wished the teams good luck. Competitors pushed their wheeled vehicles down and up through Market Street twice. Two full laps were completed before the speedy race to the finishing line, garlanded with tinsel, at the pedestrian crossing point in front of the town hall.
The winning team in the men’s race were the ‘Merriott Mothers’ with team members Nick Sale, Toby Larkins and James King. The ‘Merriott Mothers’ were well back at the start and in joint second place at the end of the first two-way lap. A sudden burst of speed as they neared the end of the race saw them overtake their close rivals to be declared the winners of the Crewkerne Boxing Day Pram Race 2017.
Winning team members of ‘Twin Power’, the ladies silver plate winners were Milly and Hannah Watkins. Winners of the Best Fancy Dress were a team from Oscars, whose landlord Richard Hall and his staff are always keen competitors and have won the pram race on several occasions. This year Richard was the first point of call for entrants registering for the race. He was awarded with the trophy for the best entry from a pub landlord.
This year’s Pram Race finished in record time without any vehicles losing a wheel or encountering any other mishaps. Terry Lawrence, a private medic was on call, having set up a first aid post in the entrance to Victoria Hall. Thankfully his professional services were not required but it was comforting for everyone to know that he was there if needed. The trophies and customary bottles of champagne were presented to the winning teams by Crewkerne Lion Lesley Chudley. Lesley said: “This year’s Boxing Day Pram Race was very much a joint effort. We would like to thank the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District, Richard Hall and everyone that helped to make it a great success. It would be wonderful next year to see other pub landlords become involved. It was great to see so many people watching the pram race and we are pleased that everyone enjoyed it.”
