A major fire above the Original Health Centre in Church Street closed the main road into the town centre from the Chard direction for around 10 hours today. Numerous calls from members of the public reporting the fire, were received by Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service at around 01.33 am this morning. Four appliances from Crewkerne, Yeovil, Martock and Beaminster, an Ariel Ladder Platform from Yeovil and a Command Support Unit from Street were mobilised by Fire Control, who also requested assistance from the Ambulance Service, Police and Western Power.
On arrival at the scene of the fire, the officer in charge confirmed that the first floor of the building was well alight and all persons were accounted for. Further assistance was requested with four more appliances mobilised from Chard, Yeovil, Martock and Ilminster, making a total of eight pumps on site. Fire crews extinguished the fire using attack jets, covering jets, compressed air foam, thermal imaging cameras and used a hydrant to supply water to the incident. As the incident remained ongoing but was scaled down, relief fire crews from Yeovil and Wincanton were in attendance. One fire appliance later remained at the scene to damp down hot spots.
The direction of the wind blew the smoke down through Church Street onto Market Street and local residents and guests at the George Hotel were evacuated in the early hours of the morning, as a safety precaution. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Church Street is reported to have re-opened to traffic at around 11 am today. (photo courtesy of Yeovil Fire Station)
