The first Chance to Dance event at the Speedwell Hall in Abbey Street, has raised £235 towards the building’s renovation appeal. More than 40 people attended the fund-raising event which included folk dancing, led by Leslye Stansfield who is a caller at Crewkerne Folk Dance Club and leader of the Crewkerne & District U3A folk dancing group. Songs from the 1950’s and 60’s sung by talented local vocalist Victoria Starr encouraged people to get up and dance. A cream tea served after the dancing was enjoyed by everyone.
The trustees of the Speedwell are trying to raise £80,000 to carry out improvements at the listed building, which include providing a new wooden floor in the hall, redecorating of the hall and upgrading the lighting and heating. The Speedwell is a registered charity and a popular venue for many local organisations, including girl guiding units, toddler groups, community choir, specialist U3A groups and the weekly Country Market held on Friday mornings.
Christine Rawe, a trustee and secretary of Speedwell said: “It is such an important asset to the town and we’re delighted that everyone enjoyed themselves at our first dance, as well as helping us to raise some much needed funds.” The next Chance to Dance takes place at the Speedwell Hall on Tuesday April 24th.
