Local butchers, Barrett Bros of Crewkerne have received a Diamond Award in the category for Bacon & Cured Meats in the 2018 Smithfield Awards. The top position of Diamond was also awarded to their streaky bacon with Guinness and black treacle, developed by one of the brothers, Steve Pocock. The annual awards by the Q Guild of Butchers recognises and rewards excellent products, produced by the best butchers in the country. It is the UK’s most prestigious competition for craft butchery products. The awards ceremony which took place at Stationers’ Hall in London was co-hosted by BBC Radio 2 presenter and food expert Nigel Barden.
Q Guild national chairman Mark Turnbull said: “The Smithfield Awards are always a celebration of butchers who are at the top of their game, combining traditional skills and knowledge with innovation, great taste and immaculate sourcing.” It is the first time that Barrett Bros have been awarded Diamond although they have received Gold awards previously and also received Gold awards at the lunchtime ceremony for their cracked black pepper sausage, red onion and sage sausage and cured gammon steaks. Gary Pocock attended the event where he was presented with the Diamond Award trophies, which are now proudly on display at the brother’s butchers shop in Market Street, Crewkerne.
Gary said: “We are really chuffed with the Diamond Award. Our bacon is a particularly good one. The product, streaky bacon with Guinness and black treacle is a bit special. It’s a very tasty combination of sweet and brew which enhances the flavour of the bacon.” Barrett Bros is a long established family butcher that has been successfully trading in Crewkerne for well over 100 years. The original butchers shop was in South Street and moved to its current position in Market Street, sometime after 1914.
