Many Crewkerne roads are impassable to traffic following yesterday’s heavy snow fall and freezing rain. While main roads in and out of the town are driveable with extreme care, others are causing problems even for four wheel drive vehicles. Ashlands Road from the junction with North Street is proving impossible for motorists from the junction with Bincombe Drive and drivers are having to turn their vehicles around and go back down to the main road. Pavements are covered with impacted snow/ice and extremely slippery.
For essential household items, the One Stop shop and Waitrose store are open in the centre of the town but are working with a minimum number of staff and stocks are running low due to no deliveries being able to get through. Lidl closed at 3 pm yesterday afternoon and remains closed due to safety concerns for staff travelling in to Crewkerne.
The Met Office have now downgraded their red weather warning to a yellow warning of snow and ice. The emergency services are still advising residents to stay home safe unless their journey is absolutely necessary. Community spirit remains high in Crewkerne with residents who are able to walk into town, with hard grip boots, calling on elderly neighbours to check if they need any food shopping. While many children are out and about enjoying the snow, they are being asked to please not sledge on pavements as it consolidates the ice and makes it dangerous for pedestrians to walk on afterwards.
