Early morning commuters were happy to take part in a survey at the Friends of Crewkerne Station open day. The short survey completed by those travelling to work by train and other rail passengers, will provide evidence to help the Friends ask for more facilities at Crewkerne railway station. One of the interesting facts to emerge was that very few people visit Crewkerne in the morning and the main reason for travelling by train from Crewkerne is to go to London or to Exeter.
Friends of Crewkerne Station secretary Gail Coleshill said: “We would like to thank travellers for agreeing to answer a short survey about where they were going and how they had travelled to the station.” The Early Bird open day saw the Friends in attendance from 6 am until around 12 noon. The open day included a pictorial exhibition in the waiting room, which showed examples of the signage at the station through the years, and highlighted the misspelling of Crewkerne on a green sign in 1978 as Crewe Kerne, that was replaced with the correct spelling after a fortnight.
There were also photographs of South West Trains livery colours of yellow and red, now changed to the black and grey colours of the South Western Railway. The Friends also ran a plant stall and a raffle and handed out Easter biscuits to passengers and visitors. Secretary Gail Coleshill said: “The Friends were very pleased that MJ’s cafe were there on the platform earlier in the morning, providing teas and coffees with a free biscuit. We were also pleased to welcome representatives from Crewkerne Gardening Club, who were very interested in the work we do to keep the natural environment looking good and cheer up the platforms with plants and flowers.”
A recent addition to the unused platform at Crewkerne station, is the Friends new mascot, a metal leaping fox, which was chosen because the name of the animal sounds like the abbreviation for the Friends of Crewkerne Station (FOCS) and having seen it, passengers will remember it long after they have departed from the station.
