The President of the Rotary Club of Crewkerne, Peter Lawrence, presented a special retirement gift to Maureen Fasan of the White Lion House Carvery in Hermitage Street Crewkerne at the club’s last meal in the popular restaurant, which has now closed. Maureen was presented with an inscribed vase, red roses and gardening vouchers to use at her new home. A spokesman for the Rotarians said: “The occasion was a milestone in the history of the Rotary Club of Crewkerne as it was the last meal served to the club at the White Lion Carvery. The restaurant owned and run by Maureen Fasan has served wonderful food to the club for 32 years. Her departure is met with sadness by club members and it will also be a loss to Crewkerne as the carvery was legendary. Maureen will be missed but we wish her a very happy retirement.”

The licensed restaurant, bought in 1984 by Claudio and Maureen, became a traditional English carvery restaurant. It was one of the oldest and most successful businesses in the town. Planning permission to change the use of the ground floor from restaurant to wholly residential was granted by SSDC in June last year. While recommending the application for approval, chairman of the Planning & Highways Committee at Crewkerne Town Council, councillor Robin Pailthorpe said: “It’s a crying shame to lose it after running for over 30 years, but Maureen Fasan wants to retire. I can’t see any grounds to object but it will be sad to lose it.”

Maureen has received dozens of cards wishing her well on her retirement. She would like to thank everyone for their kindness and has issued the following: “I’d like to thank all Rotarians and loyal customers, who have supported me over 34 years of business. Without their love and support, I would not have been able to carry on my business for so long. I shall be eternally grateful for their kindness to me and my staff. A special thank you to my staff and especially to my chef Graeme Finnie. I will miss everyone and would like to wish you all the best for the future.”
