ONE OF THE YOUNGEST TOWN CRIERS IN UK TO ATTEND BIENNIAL TOWN CRIER COMPETITION

One of the youngest town criers in the UK will attend Crewkerne’s biennial Town Crier Competition in the George Shopping Centre on Saturday June 9th. Ollie who lives near Paignton in South Devon, is following in his grandfather’s footsteps who has been crying for many years. Last month 8 year old Ollie appeared on TV’s Little Big Shots hosted by Dawn French. He explained that Oyez comes from the French for Here Ye and did a special cry for Dawn, referring to a Christmas episode of the Vicar of Dibley when she ate several festive dinners on the same day. Ollie will visit Crewkerne with Ruby, his accompanying friend.

The morning cry, known as the ‘home cry’ will begin the competition at 10.30 am and the afternoon cry around 2.15 pm, will commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. The Crewkerne Town Crier Competition is organised by Crewkerne Town Council and hosted by Crewkerne’s town crier David Craner. The Criers taking part in the competition are all members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, and the event will provide a colourful spectacle in the George Shopping Centre with lots of ‘yelling and belling’ promised on the day.
