A Pillbox which dates back to World War Two has been granted Grade 2 listed status by Historic England. Originally built as part of a continuous line of anti-tank defences, stretching from the north coast of Somerset to the south Devon coastline, the Pillbox situated along the main Crewkerne to Yeovil road, is of an unusual design and well preserved. It represents the sole remaining visible evidence of Crewkerne’s role in the Second World War.
Collin Coggan of Crewkerne & District Museum and Heritage Centre undertook extensive research into the Pillbox and its role within the overall network of defences, constructed against invasion. With this information and the support of Crewkerne Town Council, an application to have the Pillbox listed was submitted to Historic England and subsequently proved to be successful.
