A new Saturday bus service between Crewkerne and Bridport is scheduled to start once registration is in place. CB3 will be operated by Beaminster Town Council with volunteer drivers who have received the full appropriate training from Dorset County Council. The first bus on Saturdays from Crewkerne to Bridport is planned to depart from the George Hotel bus stop at 10.25 am and arrive in Bridport town centre at 11.17 am, with stops along the route in Misterton, Mosterton,Broadwindsor, Beaminster, Netherbury, Melplash and Bradpole. Later buses from Crewkerne along the same route will leave at 1520 hrs and 1730 hrs, although the last bus is not scheduled to travel through Netherbury.
The CB3 bus from Bridport town centre to Crewkerne is planned to depart at 09.22 am and 1422 hrs. The last bus is currently planned to leave from Bridport coach station not the town centre at 1625 hrs and travel via Dottery and Salwayash, arriving in Crewkerne at the Kings Arms bus stop at 1727 hrs.
The new Saturday bus service is an initiative by Beaminster Town Council, who were gifted the 16 seater bus by Dorset County Council and have applied for a Section 22 – not for profit community bus permit, allowing a stopping and hail and ride service along the route. The previous Saturday bus service between Bridport and Crewkerne, serviced by the number 40, ceased operation nearly one year ago, leaving residents particularly those living in the more rural areas without any public transport on a Saturday.
A petition was raised calling on DCC to maintain their support for the Saturday bus service, to enable residents along the route to access Crewkerne railway station, go shopping or carry out their business in Crewkerne, Beaminster or Bridport. Crewkerne Town Council stated at the time that the Saturday service was also important for students who used the bus to go to work.
News that the CB3 Saturday bus service will soon begin operating has been welcomed by ABCD- A Better Crewkerne & District, WATAG – the Western Area Transport Action Group for West Dorset and FOCS – Friends Of Crewkerne Station. Chris Turner, chairman of Beaminster Town Council said: “We apologise for the delay in bringing the bus service to you. It will be running as soon as possible, when the registration is in place.” Time-tables for the CB3 Saturday bus service will soon be available at local tourist and information centres.
UPDATE: Councillor Chris Turner, chairman of Beaminster Town Council has confirmed that the permit has been awarded from the Office of the Traffic Commissioner and the Registration Team have advised that registration is now in place. Beaminster Town Council are planning to start the CB3 bus service on Saturday June 23rd.
