The Speedwell garden provided the perfect setting for an open air afternoon concert with canvas awnings giving welcome shade for the audience and performers. The Speedwell’s second Music In The garden was attended by more than 100 people, helping to raise £1,170 from ticket sales, a raffle and refreshments for the hall restoration and redecoration fund.
Artistes performing included folk singer Len O’Connor, singer-song writer Julian Dawson and the Somerset Community Choir. The annual music event was opened by chairman of the Speedwell trustees Mike Jones. Mike Jones said: “This is a significant boost to our appeal to raise funds to replace the community hall floor and redecorate the premises. We are grateful to the performers who freely gave their services and also the volunteers who helped. Our management committee worked hard to arrange the event and we are grateful for the generous donations from local companies and residents.”
The Performing Rights Society issued a free licence for performances at the concert which helped to keep expenses to a minimum and contributions to a maximum for the appeal fund. The next fund-raising event will see the return of the popular Chance to Dance on Tuesday September 25th. Further details at www.thespeedwell.co.uk or from Mike Jones on 01460 72417.
