A visit to Melplash Agricultural Show brought back happy memories for two Crewkerne & District U3A committee members. The chair of the U3A Sheila Seymour and secretary Jane Pearce were walking along the lines of cattle being exhibited when they came across a woman washing her Red Ruby Devon’s. Having convinced her that she had lots of experience grooming horses, Sheila was allowed to have a go at washing a prize winning cow called Honeymoon, who was born on the owner’s wedding night.
Sheila Seymour said: “I learned that they put masses of hair mousse on the cattle before showing them, as they want them to look their best. It is very sticky and takes three washes to remove, so I’m sure she was delighted to have some crazy volunteer do the first one for her.” While Sheila enjoyed her cow grooming experience, Jane Pearce recalled memories of using a thresher and milk cooler on the family farm in Wales when she was a child, after coming across a display of vintage farm machinery.
