TWO CANDIDATES STANDING IN TOWN COUNCIL BY-ELECTION

Two candidates are standing for the one seat at Crewkerne Town Council. Conservative candidate Charles Aslett and Liberal Democrat candidate Rob Cottle will go head to head in the poll on Tuesday October 16th.

Charles Aslett works as a chartered legal executive lawyer. He lives in Crewkerne and many people may recognise him from his time working behind the bar at the Kings Arms and as an active supporter of the Boxing Day Pram Race. Charles believes that “working hard with young people in our community, will ensure that Crewkerne remains a place people want to live and raise a family.” In his election leaflet, Charles highlights six reasons for voting for him under the headings; Roads and Transport, Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour, Health and Welfare, Encouraging Sport and Activities, Achieving the Town’s Potential and Accountability. It is his intention if elected to increase opposition to a “politically heavily weighted council and to question sometimes unopposed decisions.”

Rob Cottle lives in Crewkerne and has had a very successful career in the retail and pub trade for many years. Rob is a keen golfer with a passion for rugby and still plays for Crewkerne. Rob understands “the struggles facing local businesses, believing there is a lot that can be done to help retailers and shoppers in Crewkerne’s high street.” In his election leaflet, Rob highlights the need to ensure that local recreational facilities remain successful, accessible and inclusive to all. He is backing local councillors to stop the potential closure of Crewkerne Library by Somerset County Council. Rob believes that libraries “have an important part to play in people’s welfare.” He also sees the library as an important community hub and his son is “a regular attendee at Baby Boogie class.”

Polling stations will open at 7 am on October 16th and stay open until 10 pm. The result is expected to be announced the following day. The time of the announcement will be dependent on turnout at the polling stations and the number of votes cast.

What are you both doing about the destruction of early help and support for vulnerable people and children in Somerset.

Sorry Paul I have only just seen this comment. Rob is supported by the Lib Dems who have been strenuously oppposing the cuts that the Tory led County Council has imposed on help and support to vulnerable people. Unfortunately with the Tory Government cuts to funds even their own local authorities are struggling.

Recreational facilities available to all!. The recreational ground in the centre of Crewkerne could have been a pleasant place for everyone but progress has been slow,in fact non existent, for those who don’t participate in sport and would just like a pleasant place to sit, walk and meet others within a reasonable distance from their homes, especially during the lovely summer that we have just had.
