The Boxing Day Pram Race in Crewkerne ended in a photo finish with organisers the Lions Club of Crewkerne consulting mobile phone users to check which team crossed the line first. In a last minute push to win the race, the Hogwarts vehicle with team members Richard Hall, Dan Parsons, Jonny Crease and Tom Pearse dressed as characters from Harry Potter almost collided with The Champiens vehicle carrying Matt Berden and pushed by George Singleton dressed as hippies and wearing psychedelic coloured wigs.
Adjudicators studied the photos and film footage, before declaring the Harry Potter team from Oscars wine bar overall winners. Richard Hall’s team was also awarded the cup for the Best Entry from a Pub Landlord and won the champagne for Best Costume. The winning ladies team of two women and two men called Force It Inn and comprising of Debra Best, Jess Clements, Ash Sartin and Shane Speed were dressed as characters from Star Wars. One other team called Purple Santas took part and Merriott Wheelers put on a display of cycling before and after the race. As always crowds of people lined the pavements in Market Street and Market Square to watch the fun event.
The next Boxing Day Pram Race on Thursday December 26th, 2019 will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the annual event. Crewkerne Lions Club are inviting new teams both junior and senior in age to join them for the Diamond Jubilee. They would also love to include a junior pram race in 2019 and are calling on local youth organisations, groups and schools to register an interest in taking part. There will also be a new cup called the Service Organisation Cup, which will be donated by Crewkerne Lions and presented to a winning local organisation or service that competes in the pram race.
Organisers are once again inviting landlords and landladies of local pubs and hotels to put forward an entry. They would also like to see Merriott Wheelers come up with a combined entry and wheeled vehicle and will be inviting a local radio station and a television network to provide live coverage of the Diamond Jubilee of Crewkerne Pram Race. Crewkerne Lion Lesley Chudley said: “It’s not too early to register your interest now in the next Boxing Day Pram Race. We would love to hear from anyone who wants to enter a team. We are very thankful to the volunteers who help us to marshal the annual event and our qualified paramedic Terry Lawrence who is always on stand by if needed.
