Town Crier David Craner will call time on his ‘belling and yelling’ at the end of this year. David who has been the Town Crier in Crewkerne for 12 years, Beaminster for 10 years and Seaton for approximately seven years, will hang up his bell after the Lighting Up Night in Crewkerne at the end of 2019. David Craner said: “After a great deal of thought and with a very heavy heart, I have decided that this year will be my last year.”

David who has fought back from ill health after being diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2016 and having had major surgery which forced him to take some time out from the roll, will be very sad to leave the post of Town Crier but is happy to report that he is now enjoying good health.

As Town Crier for the three towns, David has won many competitions. In May 2016 he was presented with the National Town Criers South of England Challenge Cup which he proudly accepted on behalf of Crewkerne, Beaminster and Seaton. Although having previously retired from his roll as Town Crier for Seaton, David will be officiating in his splendid costume at the Grizzly Race in Seaton in March. The full town crier regalia impressed judges in Yeovil last year when David was presented with the award for Best Dressed Town Crier.

David Craner has worked closely with Crewkerne Town Council to help organise the biennial competition of town criers in the town, which he admirably hosted, attracting fellow town criers from across the country and often from overseas, as well as bringing more visitors to Crewkerne as spectators on the day of the competition which was held last year in the George Shopping Centre.

As a member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, David has made some wonderful friends. He will also hold dear his time spent with French friends during twinning trips, memories which David said he will “cherish forever.” David said: “I would like to thank everybody in Crewkerne and district for their friendship and kind support during my illness. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Crewkerne Town Crier and will miss it greatly.” David’s services as a toast master or town crier are still available for local events and private functions, which he is happy to carry out for a donation in aid of Macmillan Cancer. He can be contacted through the town council in the town hall or by email to
