Local people thinking of joining Crewkerne & District U3A before the membership year formally starts in April, can sample the group’s activities for £5. Membership is open to anyone of any age who is no longer in full time work. Most activities are based in and around Crewkerne with 45 special interest groups currently running. Day trips are organised to the theatre and to art galleries in cities such as London, Cardiff and Bristol.
Members of the Art Appreciation group who visited the 2018 Royal West of England Academy of Art open exhibition in Bristol, which featured more than 400 works including paintings, drawings, sculptures, films and photography by artists from all over the country, found the exhibition most inspiring. Group leader Merle Redwood said: “They were all very different in their presentation and all amazingly original and unique. To appreciate them all we probably needed even more time than we’d allowed.”
Other cultural groups are also available to join such as Local History, Discussion and Wine Tasting. Crewkerne & District U3A also offers a choice of science groups and craft groups and range of physical activity groups. A monthly talk with a guest speaker and light refreshments is free to attend for all U3A members and is held at the George Reynolds Centre.
Special events planned for 2019 (dates to be confirmed) include a Culture Bites Season which will run over six consecutive weeks and offer lectures by experts, covering opera, portraiture, warfare artifacts, silversmiths and Shakespeare. Another new venture for this year is You The Jury where twelve members will spend a day hearing evidence from a professional on two real life murder cases and be invited to reach their own verdicts.
