Acting from Scratch classes are being launched this month, under the auspices of Crewkerne & District U3A by Ann Sutherland Cooke. Ann has spent a lifetime working in the theatre as an actor, casting director and performance director. She has also written a book entitled Acting Tips of the Trade. Ann will launch the new acting classes on February 12th at the George Reynolds Centre. Classes will run on the second Tuesday of every month from 2 pm until 4 pm, with contributions of £12 for three months payable in advance. Ideally Ann would like to limit the class size to 12 people. Most of the places are booked but there are still some available to U3A members.
The acting classes will literally start from scratch, beginning with basic terms such as stage right, stage left, up stage and down stage. Ann said: “I will then go on to help with stage deportment, voice projection and that mysterious element – presence. The classes should appeal to those who have always wanted to have a go at amateur dramatics. It will teach them some basic skills before they launch into it. Not everyone will want to act but the course will build their self-confidence and public speaking techniques.”
Ann Sutherland Cooke is about to go into production with the Friends of St Bartholomew’s Church for A Garland of Tales and Music, scheduled to be performed in the spring of 2020. Ann said: “This gives me plenty of time to find local people to make up the cast and perhaps I shall find some among my fellow U3A members, who knows what talents lie undiscovered. I am as excited as they are and can’t wait to start.” Chair of Crewkerne & District U3A Sheila Seymour said: “Our U3A has all sort of talents in its ranks and we are delighted that Ann has agreed to run this group.” For more information on the U3A acting classes, please contact Ann on 01460 30473.
