Crewkerne Town Council have announced that the cost of purchasing a burial plot in Townsend Cemetery will increase from £345 to £650 on April 1st this year. A dramatic increase of 88%. The rise is ‘no joke’ to Crewkerne parishioners who face a large increase in the cost of arranging a funeral. Tracey Warren, owner of Stoodley & Son Independent Funeral Directors said: “Cemetery fees along with many other funeral costs rise every year, usually this is tied into inflation. However, this increase in cost is obviously much larger.
“It is a shame but I understand why it needs to happen. We are very fortunate to have such a well-tended and picturesque cemetery in the town and recent work to the driveway have improved accessibility and parking. Cemetery fees in Crewkerne have been lower than those of many other neighbouring town cemeteries and these new fees hopefully will ensure the continuing high standards and maintenance of a vital town amenity.”
When asked to comment on the well above inflation rate rise in fees at Townsend Cemetery, Crewkerne Town Council said: “It has regrettably been necessary for the Joint Burial Committee to significantly increase the cemetery fees for this coming financial year. Maintenance of this beautiful Victorian cemetery chapel and grounds comes at a very significant cost to the Burial Committee. Not only are there regular chapel and grounds maintenance tasks to be undertaken but the committee is also aiming to gradually improve aspects of the cemetery, the recent laying of a tarmac driveway being a good example. It is also worth bearing in mind that the fees for the Townsend Cemetery remain competitive with those of our neighbouring cemeteries.”
Tracey Warren of Stoodley & Son is advising local parishioners that although the price increase is imminent, there is still time to pre-purchase a cemetery plot before the increase, saving £305 in future costs. Tracey said: “There are ways to save money on the cost of a funeral by a bit of forward thinking. I would strongly suggest that if it is someone’s eventual wish to be buried in Townsend Cemetery and you have not already purchased a plot, get in touch with us before the end of March and we can help arrange this for you.”
