NEW MEMBERS JOIN JAZZ APPRECIATION GROUP

Two new members have joined Crewkerne & District U3A’s Jazz Appreciation group which meets monthly at the George Reynolds Centre. The group welcomed its new members at their April meeting where they studied the Jazz Messengers, a combo led by the renowned drummer Art Blakey. Guest speaker Roger Allen said: “Art Blakey was responsible for developing more jazz talent than any other band leader of his era.” The band was considered to be the quintessential forum for musicians who wished to leave their own mark on the jazz scene.

Leader of the Jazz Appreciation group, Val Warren said: “Some of the members were not familiar with the band’s music but we were all very impressed. We were thrilled that Roger brought the Jazz Messengers to our attention and underlined the joy of being able to share music with other U3A members.” After a break for refreshments, members played tracks that they had brought along and were updated on the group’s diary dates by Val.

Events still to take place this year, include a garden party in June to be held in Cheddington, meetings that will look at traditional and modern jazz and a festive lunch in December. The U3A’s Jazz Appreciation group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the George Reynolds Centre in Crewkerne, from 2.15 pm until 4.15 pm. New members are always welcome.
