The President of Crewkerne Lions Club, Cecil Turner, was awarded a Life-Time Membership of Lions International at the 37th Charter Anniversary, held in Clapton Village Hall. Past District Governor, Lion David Atkins, presented Cecil with the award who in his acceptance speech said: “Not so much Duracell these days,” referring to his nickname given because of his boundless energy and passion to help others, which has inspired so many people over the years.
Master of Ceremonies, Lion Fred Broom, welcomed Lions from clubs in Devon, Dorset and Somerset and guests to the special anniversary event. Grace was said by Lion Helen MacDonald and the Loyal Toast given by Lion Wendy Bowles. A Lion of the Year award was presented to Lion Tracey Wilson and Carys Lim Kaili received the Don Simmons award for Kindness from Lion Lesley Chudley.
Members and guests enjoyed a delicious three course dinner, offering a selection of starters, a cold meats, fish, savouries and salad main meal and choice of desserts, which catered for all tastes and dietary requirements. Entertainment was provided by stand-up comedian Max Pipe from Honiton and Terry’s Disco, with music for all ages.
Crewkerne Lions Club are hosting a Charity Tractor Run on Sunday June 23rd. The event starts at 10.30 am from Clapton Farm and is open to any vehicles that can travel both off and on road. The route includes travelling over fields and through the back lanes of the Somerset/Dorset countryside, in a circuit of around 21 miles. Entry costs £10, passengers are welcome for £5 and both fees include a Cream Tea at the finish. On the same day, there will be a Dog Show in the afternoon and the popular annual Duck Race, with lots of prizes, in the show field across the road from Clapton Farm. This year’s main beneficiary of events on June 23rd will be Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Camping will be available for those wishing to stay overnight.
