The future of Severalls Tennis Courts was discussed by the War Memorial Commemoration Trust on Monday evening in the Council Chamber. The tennis courts have remained closed due to safety concerns of the playing surface which needs upgrading. Short term proposals put forward at the meeting included refurbishing both and including a small MUGA pitch (Multi-Use Games Area), refurbishing one tennis court only and replacing the other court with a play area and suitable space for outdoor table tennis. Councillor Mike Best said: “We already have a MUGA in town at Happy Valley and should keep it for recreation. Councillor Robin Pailthorpe said: “I don’t think there is enough demand for two tennis courts at Severalls and it would not cost a fortune to change one of the courts to a recreation area for table tennis etc.”

A long term proposal to include the adjacent waste land, is to provide housing for military personnel who are recovering from injuries received in combat, learning to live with a life-long disability or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, gained support among the town councillors. Councillor Rob Cottle said: “It would be proactive to help those less fortunate than ourselves and in keeping with the war memorial side of things, helping those coming back from PTSD or a disability and providing a leisure element for that purpose.” Councillors Dan Wakeman and Charles Aslett supported this, advising that match funding by partnerships with organisations who are working with injured service personnel, such as the Princes Trust and Royal British Legion would need to be contacted.

Councillor Mike Best advised that the first thing to clear was if building would be permitted on the site. It was not on the development plan because it was possibly protected by its status. Chairperson Councillor Kathy Head, the town’s Mayor, agreed that the Trust Agreement would need to be looked at with reference to the long-term proposal for recuperation accommodation. The proposal for one tennis court and one multi-purpose area was accepted and will go to the next meeting of the Amenities Committee of Crewkerne Town Council.
