Former fire chief John Craig proved an instant hit at the August meeting of Crewkerne & District U3A in the George Reynolds Centre and has been booked to return next year. John’s talk entitled Going To Blazes, was an entertaining mix of safety advice, current practices in the fire service, the role of women and amusing anecdotes. One of his stories concerned a male motorist, who was being released from his vehicle after a motorway accident. He was safely rescued but misheard the fire officer’s call for the Horst, trade name for specialist cutting equipment and thought he was asking for a hearse.
John Craig, pictured sharing a joke with speakers secretary Denise Smith, was Chief Fire Officer of the Wiltshire and Swindon Fire Authority for 13 years and has been secretary and treasurer of the Wiltshire Retired Firefighters Association since 2005. John gives talks to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity. U3A chairperson Sheila Seymour said: “I suspect that our members were expecting a talk about safety in the home but it was never dull, he was very impressive and an accomplished raconteur. He was so good that there was a round of applause when he agreed to come back next year.”
