The search is on for the next Town Crier, to take over from David Craner when he retires at the end of this year after 12 years of loyal service to Crewkerne. The position is unpaid, although agreed expenses can be claimed and a costume will be provided to wear at events. Anyone interested in applying to become Crewkerne’s next Town Crier should have a loud voice, enjoy speaking in public and have a good knowledge of the town. The current Town Crier, David Craner, who received the Mayor’s Commendation for Excellence in the Community at this year’s Annual Town Meeting of Electors, will work with the new recruit and train them to take over from him after his last ‘yelling and belling’ event at the Christmas Lighting Up Night.
David Craner is a member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers. As Town Crier for the three towns of Crewkerne 12 years, Beaminster 10 years and Seaton for approximately seven years, he has won many competitions. Last year in Yeovil, David was presented with the award for the Best Dressed Town Crier and in Crewkerne, he once again hosted the biennial competition of Town Criers, which is jointly organised by David and Crewkerne Town Council. David Craner said: “I would like to thank everybody in Crewkerne for their friendship and kind support. I will miss it when I step down as Town Crier and hand over to my successor at the end of this year.” Anyone who is interested in becoming Crewkerne’s next Town Crier, please contact Crewkerne Town Council on 01460 74001 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
