HELP RESEARCHING FAMILY HISTORY AT CEMETERY OPEN DAY

Visitors at this year’s Open Day in Townsend Cemetery received help as always, in locating family graves, with the assistance of Crewkerne Town Clerk, Peter Davidson and local funeral director Tracey Warren of Stoodley & Son. The annual event, when the historic burial records are on display in the chapel, was blessed with fine weather and sunshine. Talks were given by Peter and Tracey, highlighting the changes in the number and type of burials carried out from when the cemetery first opened in November 1874 to the present day.

Tracey conducted a walking tour of the cemetery where she pointed out several graves, including those of local industrialists and philanthropists who had greatly influenced Crewkerne’s social and economic history. The walking group also visited the graves of those less fortunate, who had ended their days in the workhouse. Townsend Cemetery is landscaped as a Victorian park with scenic walks among the trees and shrubs and memorial benches found along the pathways, where visitors can rest for a while or spend some quiet time in contemplation. The annual open day at Townsend Cemetery is organised by Crewkerne & West Crewkerne Joint Burial Committee.
