Crewkerne won the Gold award and the South West Travel Association trophy for towns at the 2019 RHS South West in Bloom annual awards, hosted by Newquay Town Council and Newquay in Bloom. Four founder members of the Crewkerne in Bloom committee attended the prestigious event at The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay on October 11th. Crewkerne also won the Vic Verrier Cup for Best New Entry and while the CiB representatives were celebrating the town’s fantastic success, they heard that Crewkerne Branch RBL volunteers at Severalls Memorial Garden had entered the It’s Your Neighbourhood category and achieved an Outstanding Level 5 certificate and that the children at Ashlands First School had also been awarded an Outstanding Level 5 certificate in the same category for their woodland area.

These achievements for Crewkerne and the team of CiB volunteers were amazing in the town’s first year of entry in the South West in Bloom competition and just when the group thought the results couldn’t get any better, it was announced that Bincombe Beeches had won the Sutton Cup for Best Nature Reserve in the Outstanding Area of Nature Conservation category. A spokesperson for Crewkerne in Bloom said: “We were very surprised and delighted to receive the trophies and award certificates on behalf of the town. This tremendous success was thanks to the dedication and hard work of the volunteers and the support and encouragement of the whole community, a point which was picked up and complimented on by the judges.

” Looking to next year, do we enter again? We think the answer should be a resounding YES! But to create a successful entry, we will need more volunteers. It’s not just gardening and flowers, help is needed with administration, creating and maintaining a web site and of course the watering, which is quite straightforward with our watering trolley.” Crewkerne Town Council announced the town’s success at the council meeting on Monday evening. In a statement from the town council they said: “The Town Council would like to congratulate Crewkerne in Bloom for their achievements at the South West in Bloom award ceremony in Newquay. The volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure that Crewkerne has looked fabulous all summer and the awards are all well deserved. Congratulations.” Crewkerne in Bloom are hosting a Social Evening to include the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday November 20th at 7 pm in the Heritage Centre at Crewkerne Museum.
