FOUNDING MEMBER OF MAJORETTES LEAVES TROUPE

A founding member of Merriott Majorettes has left the troupe after 23 years of service. Successful Crewkerne business woman, Juliet McKelvey of Juliets Hair Salon, started Merriott Silhouettes with a friend, after her daughters left another troupe and missed it. The name of the troupe was suggested by Juliet’s sister and its first members were Juliet’s children Samantha and Hannah, her nieces and children from the local area. The Majorettes troupe grew in numbers and moved forward from performing displays at fetes and carnivals to entering competitions. Juliet said: “There was a lot of commitment with family and social life taking a back seat. But it was all worth it, seeing the smile on the children’s faces.”

Juliet’s daughters stayed with the troupe until they were 21 years old, when they were no longer eligible to compete. Samantha who had trained the tiny tots since she was 15, stayed on as a trainer and finished this year, after the most successful year of competitions in the troupe’s history. Merriott Majorettes won over 200 trophies this year, over nine competitions. Their 2019 carnival success includes 32 golds, 23 silvers, 19 bronzes, 41 Best Lead plus many Best Dressed and Overall Awards. They are very grateful to the businesses who helped them to achieve the amazing results, namely Lift West Limited, Wizard Marquees & Events, Bristol Sound & Light Ltd, Bakers Coaches of Yeovil and Somerset, Pro Economy and wish to extend their thanks to Merriott Social Venue, Ed and Syd at Big Syds Farm and Tom Saunders, Karl Pearson and Leyland Elson for building the new trailer and sorting the sound equipment and lighting.

Juliet’s decision to leave the troupe was not an easy one but she felt it was the right time to go, due to lots of changes within the troupe and the association which the Majorettes belong to. Juliet said: “It has been like my baby for 23 years but I now have more time to concentrate on my business, my family and my hobbies. I miss the children terribly but I leave in the knowledge that I have given my best and given them a great structure to continue with.” All sections of Merriott Majorettes train on Friday evenings; Tiny Tots 4-8 years at the Tithe Barn in Merriott, Juniors 9-12 years at the Victoria Hall in Crewkerne and Seniors 13-21 years also in the Victoria Hall. Recruitment is underway for 2020, the first session offered for free. For more information, please call 07867517199.
