A recent Miss Slinky sash winner at the Crewkerne group of Slimming World, who has had Type 1 Diabetes for 33 years, is inspiring others with her story. Nathalie Aylett shared her success on managing the condition and losing weight, to raise awareness of Diabetes and celebrate World Diabetes Day on November 14th. Nathalie said: “Due to technology, the advances in diabetes care and Slimming World, I am now at my best health wise. Even before I was diagnosed with Type 1, I was told I could go blind and who at 16 years old wants to be told this. In my early years with diabetes I didn’t look after myself and was extremely underweight. However, after my husband died I started eating too much and gained a significant amount of weight. It wasn’t until my daughter took a photograph of us at the beach, that I realised I needed to do something about it.”

Nathalie joined Slimming World nearly two years ago. She also went on a one week course to learn how to carb count called Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE). Nathalie said: “Since taking the DAFNE course and joining Slimming World, I have also noticed that my insulin intake has dramatically reduced, which is great as insulin is a storage hormone, so the less insulin, the less weight gain. Now I have my diabetes under control, I have the Libre sensor which I scan to check my blood glucose levels, much better than having to prick my finger eight times a day.” Nathalie attends the Slimming World group in Crewkerne every week and says the support from other members helps her to feel inspired and motivated.

Anyone who is looking to join Slimming World with diabetes, is recommended to talk to their diabetes care team first, who will be able to offer specialist advice on diet, medication and how to manage blood glucose levels. Slimming World Consultant Vicky Welton said: “Every Slimming World consultant is provided with information on how to best support their members who have diabetes. We take guidance from Diabetes UK, British Dietetic Association Diabetes Management and Education Group (DMEG) and nutritional guidelines for diabetes care.” The Crewkerne Slimming World group meets on Mondays at 9.30 am, 5 pm and 7 pm at the George Reynolds Centre.
