Crewkerne’s Lighting Up Night on Friday November 29th begins with the opening of the Craft Fair in Victoria Hall at 5.30 pm. Other seasonal events running in the town at the same time, include Children’s Crafts at the Library, which will remain open until 6.30 pm for youngsters to call in and make a Christmas Minion and the Art and Craft Exhibition at Crewkerne Museum & Heritage Centre – open during the evening for people to view and buy handmade gifts for Christmas. Phoenix Brass Band will be playing in Falkland Square where a variety of charity stalls will be on display. Music in Market Square will be provided by Radio DJ Steve Carpenter and Christmas carols by CUDOS.
The Lantern Parade will leave from outside the Henhayes Centre to join the Christmas procession with Santa, in his sleigh, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District Trust. The festive procession will be led along Market Street by Merriott Majorettes, arriving at the Town Hall for Santa to help the Mayor Kathy Head and Town Crier David Craner to switch on the Christmas tree lights at 7 pm. Prize winners in the Best Lantern Competition will be announced and the business proprietor, judged as having the Best Christmas Window Display, will be awarded the prestigious Neill McClintock Cup.
Many of the town’s shops will remain open until late, offering festive refreshments to customers. Food and drink will also be available to buy from various stalls and will include a hog roast, bacon butties, mince pies and mulled wine. Santa will remain in his grotto at Crewkerne Town Hall for a while after the lights are switched on, to hear children’s Christmas wishes. Motorist are reminded that roads in the town centre will be closed to traffic during the procession.
