TWENTY FOUR SCHOOL TEAMS COMPETE IN ROTARY’S TECHNOLOGY TOURNAMENT

Twenty four teams competed in this years Rotary Technology Tournament held at Wadham School. Students from Wadham School, Maiden Beech Academy, Holyrood Academy, Swanmead Community School, Stanchester Academy and Bucklers Mead Academy undertook a challenge against the clock to plan, design and construct a flashing beacon and advertising billboard. The design had to have a flashing light on the top, display an advert for a chosen charity and flash a certain number of times, depending on the level of entry, incorporating Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Levels.

Teams consisted of four students, representing their schools. Students were given a pack of materials from which the design had to be constructed and were not told the theme of the design until the competition began. They were judged and scored throughout the day before the results were announced. In the Foundation Level, the winning team were from Bucklers Mead Academy who beat Maiden Beech Academy by just one point. The Intermediate Level was won by Holyrood Academy and the Advanced Level by Wadham School. Winning teams were presented with medals, certificates and a trophy by the President of the Rotary Club of Crewkerne, Iain Rowland and the tournament’s ambassador for Rotary District 1200, Crewkerne Rotarian Derek Phoenix.
