SPORTS AND LEISURE CENTRE REOPENS FOLLOWING FLOODING PROBLEMS

The George Reynolds Centre reopened on Tuesday morning after having to close for nearly 24 hours due to flooding problems. The popular sports, youth and leisure centre at Henhayes, which is home to many local groups including Jigsaw Preschool, Crewkerne Slimming World, ALS Youth Group, the U3A and Crewkerne Branch of the Royal British Legion, was forced to close after heavy rain on Sunday afternoon caused a problem with the drainage and raw sewage was reported to have seeped into the community building.

Jigsaw Preschool cancelled their Monday morning session and the Crewkerne Slimming World group, run by Vicky Welton, cancelled their Christmas party but were able to find an alternative venue for their weekly weigh-ins and held their meeting at Take A Peek Santa’s Boutique, in Santa’s grotto, thanks to shop proprietor Kylie Hammond. Authorities were alerted to the problem at the GRC on Monday morning by GRC Management.

Thankfully the water damage was not as bad as first thought and after a clean-up and safety checks, the building was classed as safe for use and signed off late on Monday afternoon. Sunday’s deluge of heavy rain and hail stones put extra pressure on the town’s drainage system, which is being currently reviewed by Crewkerne Town Council who have expressed their serious concerns on the number of drains and gulleys that remain blocked or are likely to overflow with persistent rain, to Somerset County Council.
