Plans for an ice cream parlour in an empty shop in Crewkerne are expected to receive the go ahead. A planning application submitted to South Somerset District Council, requests change of use from A1 to A3-A5, which covers restaurants, cafes and hot food takeaways, in shop 1 at 17 Market Square. Former usage of the premises, which has been empty for a considerable number of years, includes that of a launderette. Crewkerne Town Council have recommended approval of the change of use and no objections have been received from nearby businesses, who have welcomed the move which will hopefully increase footfall at that end of the town.

Somerset Highways have not raised an objection to the plans on the basis that the location of the premises is within the town centre and close to public car parks, therefore the traffic generation and demand for parking would not be dissimilar to the extant A1 use of a shop. The application includes a request for permission to install an extraction fan through the back wall which if granted by SSDC, is expected to come with the proviso that details of any fixed plant or machinery to be installed needs to be approved prior to its installation by the Local Planning Authority and be designed and installed to suppress noise and in full working order, to allay any environmental health concerns.
