Crewkerne firefighters were called to assist other fire crews from across Dorset and Somerset yesterday, at a major fire in a heritage property near Cattistock. The incident at Chalmington manor house was initially attended by Maiden Newton fire crew and a command support unit from Sherborne at around 10:42 hrs. Fire appliances from Yeovil, Crewkerne, Beaminster, Bridport, Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Sturminster Newton and Blandford also attended the fire, which was reported to have developed within the upper floor and roof of the 12 bedroom Grade 11 listed building.

In total 35 breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, two main lines, two safety jets, two 13.5 metre ladders and an aerial ladder platform were used to bring the fire under control. The incident was later scaled down to three fire appliances, which returned to their stations at around 9 pm yesterday evening. No one was injured as a result of the fire, which Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have recorded as accidental, while the building was undergoing renovation work.
