Crewkerne Museum is inviting people to find History Heroes on its website and take part in other inspired activities, with photos of people, businesses and places from yesteryear, from the safety of your homes. Administrator of Crewkerne & District Museum & Heritage Centre, Janet Harris said: “We should be open now for an exciting new season but we are staying safe at home and hope we’ll all be able to meet up again soon. If you’re missing us, then visit our website for a wander around the museum.”
History Heroes will help you to discover new things about the town, not just people but events, places and objects that have helped to make Crewkerne what it is today. The museum’s Facebook page will also include black and white photos from the past and invite any new information which viewers may have. Our featured photograph, courtesy of Crewkerne Museum, dates from April 1951 and shows a wedding party outside of the Rainbow Cafe in Market Street.
Another online activity which the museum is promoting, can be accessed on Know Your Place Somerset, www.kypwest.org.uk
Visitors will need to spend a little time to find their way around this site, the suggestion is to select Crewkerne and the date of 2017 as the basemap, then click on 1844 – 1888 as the dates of the comparison map, find where you live on the basemap and scroll across to discover what was there before your home was built. Street names, the location of businesses and community buildings may also have changed over the past 100 – 150 years. Comments on how you find the activities and any new information discovered, can be sent via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or made on Crewkerne & District Museum & Heritage Centre Facebook page underneath the photos as they appear, creating an interesting dialogue between those interested in local history and helping the museum with its research into the history of Crewkerne.
