This year’s Charter Fair planned for September 5th has been cancelled. The two-day annual event which is traditionally held on the first weekend of September, has been organised by the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District since 2012. One of the town’s most popular outdoor events, it normally includes a two-day street market, dating back to Saxon times and fun fair with fairground attractions, going back to at least 1861 and in recent years run by Edward Danters Fun Fair.
The Rotary Club of Crewkerne District Trust, who hold the Charter for the Fair, had been planning a scaled down event for this September. Volunteers had been working hard to put the necessary precautions in place and following the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines for open air events. A spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District said: “Because of various factors, we have come to the conclusion that despite our efforts, it would not be financially viable to run the fair this year. We are sorry to disappoint you, but can assure you that we will be back next year. Meanwhile, we want you all to stay safe and be alert and protect the NHS.”
Edward Danters Fun Fair have spent the time during lockdown painting their rides and attractions, ready for when they can get back on the road. A spokesman for Edward and Maxine Danter said: “In times likes this it pays to keep a positive mind. We have been busy making the rides shiny and nice and hope this inspires you to take up a new challenge or project. We are missing you all and hope you’re all safe and well.”
