Friends of Crewkerne Station have been shortlisted for a silver award from the national Community Rail Network. The CRN have recognised FOCS for their involvement in the local community, planting and watering of flowers and other volunteer duties to enhance and care for the environment at the railway station. FOCS’ entry into the ‘It’s Your Station’ category, included details of the canopy shelter and seat outside the station, paid for through the Waitrose green token scheme with match funding by South West Trains in 2017. Photos included with the entry also demonstrated FOCS at the Farmers’ Market in Crewkerne, helping to transport people by minibus to the Farmers’ and Antiques Market.
Chair of the Blackmore Vale Community Rail Partnership, Jane Smith and Partnership Officer, Caroline Rowland were delighted with FOCS’ nomination. Caroline Rowland said: “Congratulations for getting Crewkerne shortlisted for this year’s Community Rail Awards. Crewkerne is our only station to be shortlisted for an award this year, so it is a major achievement.” Judging will take place at the Community Rail Conference in December.
The Friends next event will be to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the station opening. A portfolio of written memories and experiences of the railway and of the station, have been collected by FOCS as part of a community writing project. Anyone who hasn’t already submitted a piece can do so on www.crewkernetown.org/friendsofcrewkernestation.
