ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE TO UNDERGROUND ELECTRICITY CABLE CAUSES POWER CUT

Accidental damage to an underground electricity cable caused over a seven hour power cut to homes in the Ashlands Road area on Friday. Residents reported the power cut at around 5 pm, ironically the same time as a double rainbow appeared in the sky, making it brighter outside than indoors! The initial advice from an automated message was that the power outage would last about an hour but in a subsequent call to the emergency phone line, residents were advised the “electricity supply would not be restored until at least 11 pm.” The power supply was finally restored at around 12.30 am.

A three-way traffic system was set up near the junction with North Street and Ashlands Road and the excavated site near the entrance to Wynnstay was fenced off. The power outage was caused by a third party, understood to be engineers from Gigaclear Limited who had been working at the location until Friday afternoon, as they cleared blockages and installed new fibre optic cables, “delivering ultra-fast broadband to rural communities.”
